GATEWAY TO MINDFULNESS

Yoga and meditation have enjoyed a popular resurgence in today’s world, yet these practices are ancient. In her new book “Gateway to Mindfulness: Follow Tayná on Her Journey and the Science of Letting Go in Savasana”, Dr. Leticia Nelson masterfully delves into why these age-old practices have withstood the test of time. At once entertaining and intellectual, this work marries science and yoga through descriptive and imaginative analogies that cross a wide breadth of knowledge. The personified avatar Tayná takes the reader on a fascinating journey to include a discussion of epigenetics, DNA methylation, and the hard biology behind the effects of yoga on mind and body. The author examines why the relaxing savasana pose concludes yoga sessions everywhere, dismantling the societal stigma traditionally held against any form of restorative rest in an otherwise bustling world. The book adroitly presents all of the reasons why everyone – including the reader – needs to engage in this enduring age-old practice. Best of all, you can begin today: this book includes a guided savasana practice led by the author, a certified yoga teacher who also holds a PhD in biology.

Greetings – Namaste!
Welcome to Letty’s Joy & Yoga Home!

Welcome and it is so great to have you here! Grateful am I to share with you the following about our yoga classes and practice:

They are best described as gentle yoga flow based on Hatha Yoga with a touch of Iyengar yoga style and my own scientific cues. I enjoy teaching with a focus on alignment, breathing, and movements that prepare us for relaxation and guided mindfulness meditation in savasana. Savasana is the corpse pose of yoga. It is the posture to practice stillness for our whole body.

Our practice welcomes students of all levels and age groups. How is our practice unique? Due to my husband’s job as a diplomat, our family oftens experiences the need to  to cope with living away from family and friends whom we leave behind when we move from one place to another. Just as I have found stress relief by practicing yoga, I design my classes to alleviate anxiety and depression that often emerge from life changing events as well as our daily activities. We bring a practical counterbalance to stressful life changes such as moving, starting a new job, starting a new family, or the loss of a loved one.

The deep relaxation in savasana is a way for our body to utilize our gift of self healing, self-therapy, and regeneration.

Why do savasana (corpse pose) and why now? Did you know that this is one of the only yoga poses practiced by ALL styles of yoga in the world? There is a reason for this. Savasana is the culmination of our yoga practice. It brings all the benefits from our sequence of postures. This pose also gathers and fixes those benefits into our mind, body, and spirit through deep relaxation. This is self-healing!

We may then ask ourselves:

“How, exactly, is savasana the gateway to mindfulness?”

Just like the practice of each yoga posture is mindfulness, so is savasana. This is because savasana is the gateway to mindfulness through a passive attitude. In other words, it is the absence of any movement. Stillness in the body while lying down on the floor reduces the agitation of the mind and brings us back to the alpha meditative state, and thus to mindfulness. Moreover, staying in savasana for a few minutes, is the device for brain activity to cultivate the subconscious meditation of the theta state. This is an important stage of savasana because it installs the memory of cultivating mindfulness during other times of our day. On a molecular level, the mindfulness we practice in savasana has long term effects.

Savasana gives us the gift of mindfulness and self-healing that we take with us off the yoga mat.
